What to do when you feel overwhelmed?

With so much to do, and so many people to take care of, life can become overwhelmed at times, so here are a few tips to help you when life gets overwhelming.

  • Take a moment and breathe. Pressing pause is one of the best ways to gather and assess your feelings. When you remove yourself from a stressful situation, you can reduce stress too, so find a quiet place to reflect on your emotions.
  •  Pinpoint the triggers of your feeling of overwhelm. Are you feeling burned out, stressed about an upcoming event, or has this to do with a work conflict or something in your personal life?
  •  Write out your feelings. Be honest, be brutal but don’t hide any of the facts.
  •  Consider talking with a counselor if the scope of your overwhelm is extreme. A counselor is unbiased and will give you transparent and honest advice without judgment.
  • Find a support system; sometimes, all we need is people who believe in us and be there for us
  • When your overwhelm is work-related, it might be a good idea to chat with your human resources department. Perhaps you can take some extra time off, even if it is just a personal day where you can unplug and focus on wellness.
  • Make time to get active – whether you go to the gym, take a walk, or do any other activity. Exercise can help you unwind and get back to wellness.
  •  Often, our tasks at work can be triggers for overwhelm. So, solve the problem by creating a to-do list. Write the most important and pressing tasks first and those that can be left until the next day at the bottom. This way, it will be easier to mark tasks as complete, move to the next ones, and feel more in control.

Being aware of your feelings and knowing when to press pause so you can regroup and recharge can help you to be less anxious and overwhelmed.
